Navratri Day 7 #

Entering into the third phase of the Navratri, known as Sattva, marks the last three days of this festival. This phase emphasizes purity, harmony, and spiritual elevation. It’s a time to reflect on the qualities of wisdom and clarity, allowing us to connect more deeply with our inner selves and the divine. As we celebrate, we can focus on letting go of negativity and embracing positivity, preparing ourselves for renewal and transformation.

On the previous day, we looked at the importance of clearing out negativity from within, guided by the Third Eye chakra. This helps us find balance through intuition and understanding. To escape the cycle of birth and death, we need to let go of the burdens from our past lives, which we can’t control. Instead, we should focus on improving our current actions and fulfilling our life’s purpose to break free from this karmic cycle.

On this day, we honor Maa Kaalratri, a fierce aspect of the goddess representing the destruction of ignorance and negativity, she is famously known as Maa Kali. She is the fiercest form of Maa Shakti. She symbolizes the power of anger when used to get rid of negativity and evil things can accomplish anything.

To make the most of our lives in this birth, we must engage in good deeds. However, there are obstacles that hold us back, which need to be overcome by our mortal minds since the soul is eternal. In today’s world, the mind often dominates the soul. We must free ourselves from this mental enslavement and let go of negativities like ego, pride, fame, and guilt.

Every good beginning requires us to let go of what we think we know. We often hold perceptions of things we haven’t even experienced. To truly make something our own, we need to unlearn old habits and beliefs.

Let’s explore the story of Maa Kaalratri Devi to help us remove obstacles and break free from the karmic traps that bind us.

Maa Kaalratri

Maa Kaalratri also known as Kaali, is the fiercest form of Maa Durga/Parvati/Shakti. Maa Kaalaratri embodies fierce divine energy, symbolizing the destruction of ignorance and the eradication of evil. With her dark complexion and three luminous eyes, she represents the ultimate wisdom that burns away ego and past karmas. Her compassionate yet powerful presence helps devotees overcome fears and navigate the path of spiritual awakening.

Kaalratri → End of Time, Night of Death (Goddess of End/Death of Time/Night)

The name “Kaalaratri” translates to the “end of time” or “night of death,” signifying the destruction of vices, ignorance, and fear, facilitating spiritual transformation. Goddess Parvati/Shakti took this fierce form to defeat powerful demons like Shumbha, Nishumbha, Chanda, Munda, and Raktabeej, restoring balance and order in the universe.

Maa Kaalratri represents the need to confront and overcome inner demons, ignorance, and spiritual ego, urging devotees to cultivate a state of purity and self-awareness on their spiritual journeys.

She rides on a donkey/mule giving us the message that we need to first unload the carriage of past karmas, a donkey carries a burden without any aim in mind. Just like that, we are running in this birth-death cycle without finding the true meaning of our immortal soul, we keep attaching our karma to this mortal being. Goddess Kaalratri gives a message that even a donkey with the right purpose can do great deeds but only when he is free from the past burden of karmas.

Mythological Story
#

Long ago, two demons named Shumbha and Nishumbha invaded Devaloka and defeated the gods. In their time of need, Indra sought help from Lord Shiva and prayed to Goddess Parvati. Hearing their cries for assistance, Parvati created Goddess Chandi (Ambika) to fight the demons. Chandi faced their generals, Chanda and Munda, and called forth the fierce goddess Kali (or Kaalaratri), who defeated them and earned the name Chamunda.

Then came the powerful demon Raktabija, who had a special boon: any blood he shed would create a clone of him. To stop this, Kaalaratri drank his blood before it could touch the ground, ultimately defeating him and helping Chandi take down Shumbha and Nishumbha. However, in her anger, she began to destroy everything around her.

To calm her down, Lord Shiva appeared beneath her foot. This form of Kalli is commonly used to depict her fierceness and ruthlessness, she can go to any extent to get rid of evil. When Kaalaratri saw her beloved husband, she stopped her rampage, feeling remorse for what she had done. This moment allowed Shiva to soothe her fierce nature.
